I was pleasantly surprised to see this Laughing Cow Garlic & Herbs Plant-Based Spread at my local No Frills store. It was $5.99 which I thought was a little steep. It obviously wasn’t steep enough because I bought it.

I thought the wedges tasted very good, even though I am not a fan of garlic. And for this reason, I wouldn’t buy it again; it was too garlicky for me. That’s just a personal preference. I would have no problems buying the plain plant-based spread by The Laughing Cow.

Nutritionally, it’s not that bad. Each wedge is low in calories, fat (not saturated / trans fat).

I really wish the company would change its cartoon image of a laughing / happy cow. It’s so misleading / unrepresentative of reality for its dairy products.

Each wedge has 0.5 mg of cholesterol. How can a vegan food item have cholesterol?

iszy Yeah that cholesterol being there is concerning! I got mine in the US and it did not report any cholesterol on the label.Reply
louisg Hmm, interesting. I wonder how the ingredient list may differ.1 likeReply
iszy I also noticed mine does have a "vegan" label, while yours just has "plant-based". Maybe there is something sneaky there in the Canadian version. 1 likeReply
louisg Sneaky, indeed. 😡 Reply
louisg Hi. Someone in the Canadian Vegans Facebook group had the same observation as me regarding the cholesterol. A response from the company indicated it’s a misprint. The label should read “0 mg”. The company will correct the error. 😊1 likeReply

louisg Not exactly. Look at my previous exchange. It looks like this product is plant-based, but possibly not vegan. Reply
sueprozak There doesn’t appear to be anything in the ingredient list that would make this not vegan. I think some manufacturers use plant based vs vegan because they think it’s more appealing and they may have changed the label claim but not the ingredients. Reply
louisg I don’t know, but it’s odd that a vegan product would have cholesterol. But I agree that nothing in the ingredient list suggests it’s not vegan. Reply
sueprozak The Cholesterol content on the nutritional table doesn’t register anything. Am I missing something? Reply
