Hankook listed this as a #new product in their ad — though I’m not sure
if it’s really new or just new to them. Either way, I had to try this #crispy #tofu. Technically it’s something I could probably make at home, but breading and frying is finicky for me, so it’s nice to have something #frozen and ready-to-heat. They were also on sale: they’re regularly $5.99, but on promo, it was just $2.99 for a 1-lb. bag! Who could pass up that deal? #tofulover
I really enjoyed the texture; the breadcrumb crust got very #crunchy, and the tofu inside was extra-firm (which I suppose one might expect of frozen — it was dense, chewy, and satisfying.) The cubes were both larger and more numerous I was expecting, so the value is great! I have a few notes on the flavoring: the breading was savory and also a little sweet, and they use a mishmash of different seasonings (parsley, black pepper, garlic, cinnamon??) To me, it felt like the tofu was having a flavoring identity crisis; I think a simpler herb/spice blend would make them more versatile.
Overall, though, these were fantastic! I have a fear of deep frying (though it’s the most efficient) so I ended up baking them in my toaster oven and, later, shallow-frying. It takes a while to ensure that they’re not frozen in the center, but both methods work. Highly recommend serving with a condiment: I tested black vinegar dipping sauce, gochujang mayonnaise, and yuzu kosho — all excellent! Recommended!
