Heilala was originally an aid project in Tonga founded by New Zealander, John Ross, and
his family. They partenered with a local family in the village of Utungake to establish a small vanilla plantation.
Vanilla is the second most expensive spice.
The name vanilla originated from the Spanish word vainilla, which means ālittle podsā and refers to the plantās fruits.
