Roy’s had a couple of vegan options on their display case (I think the banana

bread was also vegan) but this #muffin was calling to me. The price wasn’t posted, and I was a little shocked when it rang up as $4.50, but it is also #glutenfree, which might explain the high price. Roy’s hours are pretty narrow — they close at 2pm on weekdays(!) — so they discount their croissants past noon… no such luck for the vegan pastries, I guess.

This muffin was very #apple-fragranced and definitely meant for a #sweettooth. It had a pretty dense/moist texture, like many GF #bakedgoods I’ve tried; I forgot to ask what exactly it was made of. As you can see, it’s rather small! I had to perform that embarrassing public act of trying to scrape as many crumbs as possible off the paper so I could feel like I somewhat got my money’s worth. I probably wouldn’t order this one again.

A little background on Roy’s Station: this family-owned and independently operated cafe is an SJ Japantown institution. Originally a Mobil gas station, it’s since been converted into a bright, succulent-filled hub for the local community (it’s also apparently solar-powered?) The patio is always filled with friends catching up, retirees enjoying a nice day, and tech workers and students on their laptops. Roy’s serves Verve coffee — the cold brew, pictured, is made with Sermon blend espresso — and charges an extra $0.50 for soy. #supportlocal
